  2. The package of Bisqick used to use water to make the mix. The more recent packages use milk. When I make this "homemade bisqick" recipe do I use it as is or do I need to add water to make the biscuits?

  3. Hi. I made another recipe of "homemade bisqick" and I made biscuits out of it this morning. It is WAY too salty. SO I came to find another recipe and I found this one. It looks like every single review is awesome so I am going to try it, without the salt, just this once and mix it with mine so I don't lose half a container of ingredients. Looking forward to trying this.

  1. I made this recipe when I wanted to make the Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuit recipe which calls for Bisquick. The biscuits turned out great! I followed the recipe exactly, except I didn't sift the dry ingrediants. I used organic non-hydrogenated shotening. I will now stop avoiding recipes which call for Bisquick because now I can make my own Bisquick. Thanks for the great recipe!!!

  2. Absolutely perfect! I didn't sift, but used my Cuisineart on pulse to mix, including the shortening. Also used Cream of Tartar & soda in equal parts for raising agent, as my husband HATES the metallic taste of baking powder. Very happy with how it acted and tasted in my "Baked Ground Beef Bake"! You'll like this too.

  3. I am never wasting my money on store-bought Bisquick again! This recipe makes great pancakes.

  4. Love this recipe! Was glad to find it on here. I used freshly milled whole wheat flour and unsalted butter instead of shortening - in hopes of it being a little healthier!

  5. OUTSTANDING! I made this mix (so easy)and then used some of it to make the dumplings on my homemade chicken and dumplings. The only thing I added was parsley and buttermilk, to make a soft, moist dough. They were the best dumplings I've ever made, because the mix was so well formulated. We liked it better then the original Bisquick mix dumplings. Update 1/5/08: I also used mix to make pancakes (adding a little oil, buttermilk and 1 egg). They were delicious! Thanks for a very delicious "substitute" recipe.

  1. I cut this recipe in half and made added cheddar cheese to make my favorite dumplings for pot roast they came out amazingly this morning I’m going to look for a recipe in here for waffles. Love this Never going to buy bisquik again ??

  2. Regarding the 1T of salt in the recipe, maybe lessening it to maybe 1-1/2t would help, since solid veg shortening has salt added? Or keeping the salt and using unsalted butter or low sodium tub shortening? Just a thought.

    Karen F.

  3. I also add 1 tsp. baking soda. Works well. Otherwise I love this recipe. Thanks, better than Bisquick, cheaper too.

I live in a small rural community just south of Kansas City, MO. I have three sons, one in the Navy in Virginia, one in the Air Force in Montana, and one here in MO. All are single. I live with my DH and one very spoiled (rescued)cat named "Oscar" who loves to watch TV when I put his "Hammy Hamister" tape in. I retired from full time work when we were transferred to southern California for three years. Loved That! Since coming back to Missouri, I work a few hours a week for our oldest son. Otherwise I'm usually home on the zaar website! Where does the time go?????I have hundreds of cookbooks and enjoy reading them all, but I especially enjoy the cookbooks with "pictures" of the finished product! My passions, besides my husband, include collecting cookbooks, collecting Boyds Bears, collecting Peteroboro Baskets, vacationing in Palm Springs, getting on the Zaar site, and making our cat happy!I don't really think much about pet peeves, but I do dislike all the "insert" pages the magazine companies put in their magazines!

Is Bisquick just self rising flour? ›

Self rising flour consists of flour, salt, and baking powder. Bisquick contains all of these ingredients plus hydrogenated vegetable shortening. One cup of Bisquick can be substituted by a mixture of one cup of flour, 1½ teaspoons of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of oil or melted butter.

What kind of flour is used in Bisquick? ›

Bisquick is not flour, it's a baking mix. It is made with bleached enriched flour, palm oil, dextrose, corn starch, leavening, canola oil, salt, and sugar. The corn starch lowers the protein content to make things like biscuits and pancakes more tender.

What's the difference between Bisquick and regular pancake mix? ›

While pancake mix and Bisquick share many ingredients, the two are not the same. The main difference is that the pancake mix is sweeter. Most pancake mixes can be used in place of Bisquick and vice versa in sweet recipes. Compare your pancake mix with Bisquick's ingredient list before swapping.

What happens if you use water instead of milk in Bisquick? ›

Preparing the Bisquick mixture with water instead of milk will not alter the taste of your pancakes or biscuits, but may make them slightly drier. Sift together in a large bowl six cups of Bisquick, 2 tbsp. of baking powder, 1 tbsp. of baking soda, 2 tbsp.

Can you use pancake mix to make Bisquick? ›

Most pancake mixes are very similar to Bisquick and contain flour, leavening, salt and hydrogenated oil. Pancake mixes may contain slightly more sugar, though, resulting in a sweeter final product. They work best for sweet breads, muffins and scones rather than savory dishes when substituting for Bisquick.

Has Bisquick changed its formula? ›

The company overhauled the Bisquick formula in 1965 to make better biscuits, but spokeswoman Becker says the company is constantly testing and changing its products. The pancake recipe was changed, she said, “because consumers told us they wanted a lighter, fluffier pancake.” The waffle recipe also is new.

What happens if you use both baking soda and baking powder? ›

Recipes that use both baking soda and baking powder

There are two other reasons for using both: If a recipe is relying on an acidic ingredient for flavor (like buttermilk or lemon juice), too much baking soda would neutralize that flavor. Using both baking soda and baking powder maximizes the flavor and the rise.

What makes Bisquick not rise? ›

Why are my biscuits heavy and why didn't they rise? o Not enough Bisquick or too much liquid. o Too little or too gentle kneading. o Dough stood too long before baking.

Why use baking soda instead of baking powder? ›

Baking Soda and Baking Powder Conversions. Baking soda is a much more powerful leavener than baking powder, about 3-4 times as strong. That is why you will notice that recipes usually call for a small amount of baking soda, typically ¼ teaspoon per 1 cup of flour.

When should you not use self-rising flour? ›

As a general rule, don't use self raising flour if there is another leavening agent called for in the recipe such as yeast or baking soda. The leavening in the self raising flour is usually enough. More, don't substitute self raising flour in your recipe without paying close attention to the rest of the recipe.

What happens if I use self-rising flour instead of all-purpose flour? ›

Remember that self-rising flour is a softer flour, so baked goods made with it will not be the same as when you use all-purpose flour—for example, cookies may spread more and be thinner and crisper than if made with all-purpose flour.

How to make Bisquick out of self-rising flour? ›
