I know. They have only been talking about a desert battalion since 1989 when 77 was built. It was built with battalion chief’s quarters at the time.

Any changes to the channel assignments? Will Battalion 8 be on KRN 3 with the others?

Unknown at this time. They have been having some problems with Kern 5 lately and they have been working on it, even today Control 5 has been doing tests on it. We will hear tomorrow. I would think they will still be Kern 3. I am guessing Battalion 8 will have this for his pager tones A 1122.1 B 510.5 if it is the same as the rest of the BC’s pagers.

Does this mean, I assume, that all apparatus in Batt. 8 has to have numbers repainted? Does not seem like it would be an easy process.
EDIT: I reread the first post. There is going to be a bunch of repainting needed.

I'm pretty sure it's about 20-30 min per Engine with a heat gun to remove decals and the new ones are pre-measured ready to go.

The number decals have been changed already, they are just decals. The signage on the stations, is another story.
Battalion 8 is in service but the new numbering has not went into effect yet.

Guess there was a problem updating the CAD/MDT’s over the weekend with the new station/apparatus numbers. It was fixed this morning (4/24) and are now in use. Going to take a lot of getting used to them after 40 plus years.

Wasn't there once a seasonal station or patrol 79 in Alta Sierra? Anyone know if it's gone or have a new number now that Greenville is station 79?

It was a seasonal station that would happen in the summer if there was budget money. We will see what happens this summer.

I think this is worse than when we went from UHF to VHF and all the quick calls changed. After 20 years you learned everyone’s tones and then it was all new again. Now the quick call is back up to the ZTRON. Back when I started Battalion 8 was the training chief and you never heard him on the air. 74 to 84 isn’t so bad but 77 to 81 is the one that keeps getting me. The station is about 3 blocks from my house and I can remember it being built back in 1988/1989.

To Eng 74.....I've been a KCFD listener for many years and understand what you meant about the change in tone alerts. I've noticed for a while now that I only hear tone alert now and then when it used to be for every call. WHAT IS "ZTRON" that you mention?

Second question......Battalion 8 was recently over wildland incidents and equipment, if not mistaken and if so, is there a new Battalion designation replacing that job?

The ZTRON goes over the wide area network, basically the county Wi-Fi microwave system. If the stations ZTRON is not working the quick call system is used. You will hear chief’s, safety officers, Air Ops, hand crews, and Cal City get the over the quick call for all of their responses. Every Thursday at 10:00 A.M. or close to it, the quick call is tested for everyone with an all call. I haven’t heard anything about the wildland coordinator.
