Go through your makeup

This New Year’s make it a point to clean out your makeup collection. Old products no longer serve their purpose and are just taking up much needed space.

Get rid of old mascara. Experts say that mascara should be changed at least every 3 months! If you have any old mascaras lying around, it’s time to ditch them and replace them with something cleaner and more useful.

Also be sure to check your glosses, foundations, and powders! While these products typically have a longer life than mascara, it is always good to make sure they are still intact and clean for yourself and your clients. Makeup that has gone “bad” or is older than it should be can develop a strange smell. You should always give it a test just to make sure it’s not past its prime!

Keep your pencils and liners sharp

Keeping your lip liners, eye liners, and eye brow pencils sharp will help keep them fresh and sanitary! Set reminders to check your makeup tools often and sharpen anything that seems dull or was recently used.

You also want to make sure you are always properly capping your tools. After every use, make it a habit to cap the tool properly and put it back in your makeup bag. This will help keep the inside of your bag clean, preventing pencils from spreading or picking up any unwanted bacteria!

Wipe off your products

Before using any eye shadows, powders, bronzers, or blushes, wipe them off with a tissue. Removing the top layer of the product will help get rid of any resting oils or bacteria. Wipe them gently so as not to waste the product and they’ll be ready to use! This shows your clients that you are taking their health seriously and it will stop any unwanted germs from getting on your own skin.

Get an agenda and plan a schedule

The easiest way to stay on top of your makeup sanitization routine is to schedule and plan your day to fit it in! Agendas are great tools to keep yourself on top of important tasks and duties that need to be completed during the day. Get yourself into the habit of writing what needs to be done for the next day at night before you go to sleep! Many people use apps on their phone or an actual agenda that is easy to carry around. Keeping yourself on a schedule will help establish a habitual routine.
